I’m finally going to get started work on the truck. Got the bed removed and will be stripping all the way down to the metal and starting over.
Just sprayed some primer on this with my new Sagola 3300. It sprays primer slick as glass! You guys really need to get one of these guns! There is a group buy on another forum. Sorry…I couldn’t help myself :rofl

You mean your not in the group purchase :rofl :rofl :rofl How come you are stripping it?does it have a few repaints on it? Check out WA560Q ice pearl, its cleaner with a blue flip as opposed to WA800J which is too yellow IMO.Thanks for posting pics :cheersAugust 15, 2013 at 5:14 am #44078

Nah. My “cheap” Devilbiss FLG3 does fine for me. I’m stripping it because I’ve got small bubbles forming under the black basecoat. The truck was primed with Evercoat Euro Fill primer and sanded down with some 600 before I sprayed the black basecoat. The primer is stuck to the OEM finish so I’m not sure what happened. As for the actual color of the truck I haven’t decided yet. I was going to do a basic white or that pearl but I’ve talked myself out of it now. I got to thinking about it and I think it would work in my benefit (if I want to have other side jobs) to have something a little more custom and eye catching for people to see. As of right now I’m thinking about a metallic red on top, a 1/4″ silver pin stripe that starts at the front and v’s off to the back to about 4″ or so. Sort of in a shape like this: < if you catch my drift. So basically 1/4" silver stripe on the top and bottom of that in the insert have a marblized effect or something else airbrushed in it and then a bright white on the bottom section. As for products I'm thinking about using House of Kolor. They have a new clearcoat called USC01 that is meant to replace UC35 and UFC35 and is less expensive. I'm pretty sure it will have a slow drying time but as long as I can spray one day and take it out of the booth the next I'm fine with that. Let it sit in the sun a few days, sand it down and possibly do a flow coat or just buff. My plan is to do the pinstripe and art work here at the house and spray an intercoat clear over it. I can then just scuff over that area and take to the paint booth to do the top and bottom colors. All of this is subject to change though as I get different ideas and change my mind as I go.August 15, 2013 at 3:22 pm #44084
Go with the flow coat instead of the buff! Keep the pics comming.August 18, 2013 at 12:52 am #44116
Got the bed pretty much stripped. There is a little e-coat left behind but it’s been feathered out with 180 grit. Time for some epoxy and 2k!

Honestly it looks a little choppy. I would run some 80 over both sides again then 180. Keep the DA as flat as possible when doing soAugust 18, 2013 at 11:30 pm #44131
Went back over it with some 80 and then 180 and shot some epoxy. I did have small dent in the bed side that I noticed when I was stripping it so I repaired that. Also had one on the top bed rail which was like that when the panel was shipped.
And some 2k:

Looks like my passenger 3rd door and front door had a bit of damage on the lower edges. Not sure how thick the bondo is but I sure am grinding off a lot. Anyone know where I can get replacement skins other than Chevrolet that are worth a crap?August 23, 2013 at 3:06 am #44200
Sometimes we can find gm seconds on full doors through lkq. I have had real decent luck with them.

I got lucky. A guy I work with just bought a wrecked 2005 model and all he wanted was the motor, ecu, wiring and transmission out of it so I got the front door and 2 door panels for $100. I did have to pay $200 for the rear door at a salvage yard though. Still not too bad. The front fender had some damage at the very bottom too but it’s not too bad. I can work with it.August 23, 2013 at 11:46 pm #44216
Here is the 3rd door:
And where I’m at right now with the “construction”:

New(er undamaged) 3rd door. Should have the front door next week.

I’ve always liked the look of the HD hoods so I figured I would get one of those while I’m painting.

Are you sure the 3/4 ton HD hood is gonna fit a 1/2 ton pickup? If i remember correctly i had an issue on the front/grill once upon a time. Looking good!August 25, 2013 at 5:20 pm #44243

I’ve seen a lot of guys do it. I’m pretty sure the hood fits fine but the hd grille won’t fit on a 1500.
