Day 10

Day 10

I\'ve had a bit of time now to start looking at the volvo again. I\'m going to take the opportunity to do what I should have done a while ago and get some of this stuff coated with epoxy.

When I took a walk by the other day I could see some flash rust forming so I didn\'t want it to get any worse. I started by sanding most of it off then using a metal treatment with a scotchpad to knock off the rest. I then let it soak for 15 minutes, washed it off and it leaves a zinc coating on the metal:

(I had a video that accidentally got deleted that showed the metal after, very clean before the next step)

Next I scuffed it up and applyed a polyuroxy primer. Polyuroxy is a BASF trademark product that is just as good as an epoxy but cures much quicker and has behaviors similar to urethane products. This Polyuroxy is produced from RM EP569 with UA97 Polyuroxy Additiveand DH46 Hardener.

I did this to the Hood, Sunroof and Decklid today. I will try to get the inside of these parts painted soon and move on the outside, there are a few dents to fix.

Here is the decklid and a video of it being sprayed below:

It striped a bit because the primer gun seemed like it was cleaned poorly. The downside of lending out your gun, doensn\'t always get cleaned to your standards. This is what happens when you spray with a dirty gun, it\'s not the end of the world but not ideal.

Here is where I am with the Sunroof:

It has polyuroxy on the underside while the outside has been epoxy primed, filled with polyester filler and then had a urethane primer surfacer applied over that. It will need a block sand and then it\'s pretty well ready to paint. The inside I won\'t be getting too fussy with since it\'s completely covered by trim, as long as the metal is protected I\'ll apply some paint to it next and that\'s about it.

I\'ll also clean up that lip a bit too. It\'s still a bit pitted from sandblasting/rust. I\'ll also prefit it and make sure it lines up alright, it may need a bit more work yet. ( I didn\'t do the repairs on this personally). There was also a hole that was welded up.
