I don't know if its just my paint lines and shop but we've had a hell of a time with the Fiat colors, almost every one we've had to tint. Since we do work for some Chrysler dealers now they are rolling out the Fiats and i see alot of them. We still have both BASF and Dupont but neither could provide a great match on today's which was PAJ, a grey metallic. I'm curious to know if this is a problem others have observed.

I haven't had the misfortune of painting one of those ugly ass cars :)

I remember the paint rep mentioning problems with Fiats, though. He was saying there was a lot of inconsistency at the factory so trying to match the colours has been a big challenge.

Have you noticed that with the ones you are doing? Are different cars of the same colour looking different from each other? Or maybe even panels on the same car be be more transparent in some areas?

The other painter at my shop luckily for me has had the majority of them..lol.. So I haven't really picked up on that more just know our formula never matches. The panels seem fairly consistent, also I had scanned almost every panel with the spectrophotometer and got the same reading which doesn't usually happen. I'm hoping maybe the new scanner that does flake too will prove its worth if it can hit these colors..still on back-order though.

Have you phoned the DuPont help line or talked to your rep? There may be field formulas to try out. When I used DuPont they were pretty helpful with issues like that.

Ill maybe give the help line a shot, I just don't want to mix up 5 gallons of variants to find something close...this is where I miss the chips lol...but then again the BASF ones rarely had anything close. My rep was in today and did a blind scan which picks a formula ignoring the paint code and it was off quite a bit also, I ended up tinting another formula and prepped for a Texas blend in the morning. My reps fairly new to the field, he didn't seem to know of problems specific to Fiats but I'm not sure how much exposure hes had to these problems yet.

Having painted more than my fair share of Fiat's I'd agree with Ben's first post - they do seem to be inconsistent with their colours. I always had trouble with NEXA and had to tint most colours.

DeBeer used to have 5 variant booklets for Fiat colours, whereas most manufacturers just needed one or two. Kinda gives you a clue :)
