shooting SPI universal clear with a 1.3 tip 5 Months ago Karma: 0
I have been interested in trying SPI Universal Clear but they don't reccomend using anything smaller than a 1.4 tip with this product---For clear I use a Sata 3000 RP with a 1.3 tip---Im not going to buy a new tip just so I can spray this product when there are other good products out there that work well with a 1.3 tip---Has anyone on here shot SPI UC with a 1.3 tip and did it work well for you?

Im not a painter but i wouldnt worry about it. No two painters are alike, some move fast many passes, some are slower and more deliberate when clearing. Two guys with the same equipment could easily have very different mil thickness readings and appearance.

its really no problem. i myself have shot atleast a couple hundred gallons of universal clear. mostly all with a 1.4 but i know many guys who use a 1.3 and its not an issue. that clear is so user friendly its not funny.

I've never used that particular product (can't seem to get SPI over here ), but I can't see a problem. The SATA 3000 puts out a lot of material for a 1.3 anyway, so is probably closer to many manufacturers 1.4's.

I like the SPI MS clear

I would try the universal with the 1.3 if thats the only tip I had.

Han, Doright--What characteristics about the MS make you prefer it to the universal

Smisco The MS and Universal clear both use the same resins, so the quality is exactly the same, however the MS uses one different solvent.. That solvent makes it appear to be thinner, when it actually has 1% more resin content than the Universal.. Also the clear lays down smoother and flows better/longer..
It is preferred for flow coating by just about anyone who has sprayed it..

I have only used the Universal and HS that has now been discontinued and basically replaced with the Euro..
I have some Euro I am going to spray this summer.. JimC has used more SPI than anyone I know of period.. He loves the new Euro and if I am correct it is becoming his favorite of Barry's clears and he has used them all!!!

all good clears and i think i am liking the ms over universal now as well. the universal is great for a beginner since it is much harder to run than the ms. bk pretty much covered it. ms is just a little slower for better flow.

Yup, all good clears for sure. The only draw back with the Universal is that
it's super soft. It's great for garage queens (show cars/bikes) that wont see
the road too much. Basically it swirls easy.

The MS on the other hand, wont swirl up that easy. It's a few clicks harder
but still soft by any standard. And after cutting and buffing for 40 hours
or so, it's extremely nice that it wont swirl up after a wash. On the down
side, you can get runs much easier as it is very thin (probably good with
a 1.3 tip). Best not to shoot this in low temps (run city). 75 degrees and
higher.

i cant rememebr if i told you this han but there was a slight change in the universal clear activator about a month or so ago so its a bit harder now. its kinda like the euro where it wont fingerprint after 24 hours. i have not used the new activator so i dont really have any feedback on it as of yet.
